Trains & Trolleys HP Helps Russian Railways Improve IT Operations
Jul 11, 2012 – HP News

World’s second-largest railway company boosts IT effectiveness, maturity with HP Software.

HP has announced that Russian Railways, one of the world’s largest railway companies, has significantly improved its IT operations with HP IT Service Management (ITSM).

HP ITSM has boosted the effectiveness and maturity of Russian Railways’ IT services by automating the management and quality control of its IT service support processes.

Russian Railways, the government-owned national rail carrier of the Russian Federation, operates more than 86,000 kilometers of routes, and carries approximately 1 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight annually across nine time zones. Russian Railways is one of the world’s largest companies, employing 950,000 people. As part of the Russian Ministry of Railways’ comprehensive Railway Structural Reform Programme, Russian Railways needed to boost the maturity of its IT systems and processes to meet its business goals.

HP and partner Digital Design used ITIL best practices to seamlessly transform Russian Railways’ IT processes without disruption to day-to-day business. An on-site team of HP ITSM specialists in the Main Computing Center—Russian Railways’ recently created IT organization—helped to successfully manage the project and will support Russian Railways’ IT team to drive further changes while maintaining organizational integrity.

“New challenges faced by the Main Computing Center have driven demand for a fundamentally new approach to managing the support of IT services,” said Alexey Illarionov, chief information officer, Russian Railways. “We needed a quality breakthrough in terms of IT-systems use. HP made it possible to increase the quality of IT services without increasing the number of IT specialists. The level of IT maturity in the company has risen to considerably higher than the average worldwide rates,(1) increasing our ability to adopt to the changing business environment and support fast introduction of new services.”

Russian Railways’ process-focused system is now used by 11,000 IT staff members and key IT providers, as well as 250,000 employees. The quality of IT services provided by all Russian Railways’ departments and subsidiaries are controlled via service-level agreements, and application campaigns for IT services have become standard procedure.

With the world’s largest installation of HP Service Manager software, Russian Railways has automated processes for all incidents, changes and work orders carried out within the company’s IT infrastructure and is able to reallocate the most advanced IT resources for more innovative tasks.

“HP has enabled Russian Railways to drive its IT organization to the highest level of maturity in a short time,” said Alexander Mikoyan, managing director, HP Russia. “HP’s advanced technologies and wide international experience helps companies like Russian Railways to achieve the best results for their business and become industry leaders.”

HP’s premier Europe, Middle East and Africa client event, HP Discover, takes place Dec. 4-6 in Frankfurt, Germany.
